Haverhill Massachusetts Information and Highlights

Haverhill is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 60,879 at the 2010 census.

Located on the Merrimack River, it began as a farming community of Puritans, largely from Newbury Plantation. The land was officially purchased from the Pentuckets on Nov. 15, 1642 (a year after incorporation) for 3 pounds, 10 shillings. Pentucket was renamed Haverhill and would evolve into an important industrial center, beginning with sawmills and gristmills run by water power. In the 18th and 19th century, Haverhill developed woolen mills, tanneries, shipping and shipbuilding. The town was, for many decades, home to a significant shoe-making industry. By the end of 1913, one-tenth of the shoes produced in the United States were made in Haverhill, and, because of this, the town was known for a time as the "Queen Slipper City." The city was also known for the manufacture of hats.

History

Haverhill has played a role in nearly every era of American history, from the initial colonial settlement to the French and Indian Wars, and the American Revolutionary and Civil wars.

The town was founded in 1640 by settlers from Newbury, and was originally known as Pentucket, which is the Native American word for "place of the winding river." Settlers such as John Ward, Robert Clements, Tristram Coffin, Hugh Sheratt, William White, and Thomas Davis aided in the purchase of land known by Indians as Pentuckett. The land was purchased from native Indian chiefs Passaquo and Saggahew and permission was granted by Passaconaway, chief of the Pennacook's. Settlers, Thomas Hale, Henry Palmer, Thomas Davis, James Davis and William White were its first selectman. First Court appointments; given to end small causes were given to Robert Clements, Henry Palmer and Thomas Hale. At the same court, it was John Osgood and Thomas Hale that were also appointed to lay the way from Haverhill to Andover. It is said that these early settlers worshiped under a large oak tree, known as the "Worshipping Oak."

The town was renamed for the town of Haverhill, England, in deference to the birthplace of the settlement's first pastor, Rev. John Ward. The original Haverhill settlement was located around the corner of Water Street and Mill Street, near the Linwood Cemetery and Burying Ground.

Location

Haverhill is bordered by Merrimac to the northeast, West Newbury and Groveland to the east, Boxford and a small portion of North Andover to the south, Methuen to the southwest, and Salem, Atkinson and Plaistow, New Hampshire, to the north. From its city center, Haverhill is 8 miles northeast of Lawrence, 27 miles southeast of Manchester, New Hampshire, and 32 miles north of Boston.

Haverhill, Massachusetts, gets 45 inches of rain per year. The U.S. average is 37. Snowfall is 57 inches. The average US city gets 25 inches of snow per year. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is 125.

What makes Susan Sells the best possible choice

when you want to sell your property in Andover?

Thank you so much. More than that, we could not have imagined selling the house would be so much work after 40 years nor could we have dreamt the process would go so smoothly with you on our side. It’s been a long journey (and a long winter) but you’re a very special person and that comes through with your work. You have a plan from early on and every step of the way so that we felt looked after and got the results we wanted; even better!  Everything you did was with our interests and goals in mind and you know who to call whether it’s photographs, mopping the floors, or outstanding promotional pieces.

Bill and Judy

Susan delivered on 100% of what she promised during our initial
interview. Her knowledge of the current market conditions and
no-nonsense, down to earth approach made her the clear
choice out of all the agents we met with.
Her experience and creativity was evident in her marketing plan,
staging of the house and MLS listing. They ultimately attracted
dozens of prospective buyers, leading to a quick sale (less than
1 week) at above list price to a couple that absolutely loved the
home.
Susan also guided us through a family crisis during the sale (a
debilitating medical condition suffered by my sister/half-owner),
helping us to navigate around any obstacles in our path.
I would not hesitate to recommend Susan and her team. They
are a group of consummate professionals who go the extra mile
to understand the needs of their clients and deliver upon their
promises. We had a great sales experience and couldn't have
been any more satisfied with the results.

Thank you, Susan!  Steve Tatarunis

We had previous experience with another broker that made us weary of going on the market again. Susan

listened to our needs and addressed them. We feel she provided us with service customized to meet our

particular circumstance and she sold our home in an astounding six days. What a relief it was to work with a

capable, consummate professional who cared about our home and our family.

Susan was patient and clear throughout marketing period. She protected our interests and made certain we

understood each aspect of the sales process.

Susan always responded to calls and emails immediately. She listened to our every concern, no matter how

trivial. Susan also guided us toward the best outcome for our investment.

The administrative staff, photographer, stager, other agents and all members of Susan's team were

supportive, helpful and informative. They assisted in putting our property in its best light and assured that

closing was a seamless and smooth process.

Susan Rochwarg is a superstar among her peers. I'm so proud of myself for choosing her to sell my home!!
